Microwave radiation
 

Hi...

Curious if anyone can tell me if I might be doing
myself some harm...

Nicads in the cordless phone gave up. New one was
cheaper than replacing the batteries, so bought one
of the new(ish) 2.4 gig ones; branded Memorex.

Looooong conversation with my eldest; re-heated some
left over coffee in the microwave, and was surprised
to hear the microwave clicking in the telephone.

Don't know how to describe better than to say 12 feet
away I could hear it. Six feet away it's bothersome.
Right at the microwave is interrupts the conversation.

Does anyone happen to know if this is normal acceptable
leakage, or do I replace the microwave before I cook myself? :)

It's normal, the microwave runs at around the same frequency, doesn't take
much radiation at all to mess up the phone.

I assume this is a triac or relay switching AC power to the magnetron. Not a
concern. See if it happens at 100% power or only at lower power settings.

The interference you are getting is normal. The stray radiation you are
getting is not dangerous. In fact, I would believe that the noise you are
getting is more of the electrical interference from the control electronics
in the microwave oven, than from the magnetron's carrier.

In any case, there is no danger since I am sure that your microwave oven is
not having a serous leakage problem. Microwave ovens that are leaking are
usually ones with very loose door hinges, or where the door alignment is out
due to abuse from slamming it too hard all the time. Generally you would
notice that the oven's door is too loose, or does not close properly, and
the unit still turns on to cook. The microwave oven has safety switches that
are aligned so that the door has to be properly closed in order for it to
operate.

I would not be worried about the microwave oven having a leakage problem. If
you feel paranoid about this, you can take the oven over to any of the large
service centres that service microwave ovens, and have a leakage test done
on it. Some places do not charge for the test.

My local dollar store was selling testers that can detect microwave leakage.

My Vtech (900 MHz) phone started doing the same thing.
--Purchased a new battery and problem was corrected--a day or two later
problem resurfaced.

--Bought a new microwave but no change

--Traced the problem to a bad phone battery charger unit
--Bought a new 5.8 GHz phone and problem was resolved
