Mercury cells

I would like to know how long for is possible to store, and in wich
conditions (temperature), the out of production mercury cells 1.35Volts
PX625.
They are infact now rare, due to the mercury contained iside that creates
enviroment contamination problems. On the other hand it is no easy to obtain
with other batteries the same perfrmances on some apparatus, due the
constant voltage output.
Considering that I still have a couple of PX625, I would like to know how
long may I expect to have them ready to work with my exposure meter Gossen
Lunasix3 that accepts also the new alkaline 625 but showing no useful
indications due the different voltage ( using two PX625 there is a
difference of plus 0.3 Volts).

Is there any serious adapter to use with different battery type? I was
thinking to choose Silver-oxide cells and do not take in consideration
air-zinc technology because of the short life of cells: less than one year,
even if you do not use the meter, from the moment you lift the label.

MOST IMPORTANT: How can I manage the mercury exausted cells? Can I put them
in the "normal" exausted batteries bin?

Thanks. Carlo

Carlo-

The reason mercury cells were outlawed, is because they are extremely hazardous
to the environment. If they end up in a land-fill, the mercury will find its
way into the water supply, which will cause illness and/or birth defects. They
must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

I believe that refrigerating a battery will slow down its self-discharge.

There is another approach you can take to use commonly available silver oxide
cells. There is an adapter that uses a semiconductor to reduce the voltage to
1.35 volts, and claims to have a resulting discharge curve almost identical to
the mercury cell. Take a look at http://www.criscam.com/mba.htm.

I have not tried this adapter myself, but plan to. I have several pieces of
photographic equipment that use the PX-625.

Either buy them in Canada or Mexico or use the hearing aid air cells. The
latter only last a year but they're easy to find.

What about fluorescent tubes, HID lamps, and other mercury-containing
devices? Are mercury batteries really any worse? Wouldn't recycling/mercury
recovery be a better option than banning them?

Doesn't matter. You can't sell non mercury-free batteries any more in the
US. Senators are involved and speeches have been made. Bribes were not paid
so it's a done deal.
