Panasonic CTN-2056S Convergence off - serviceman mode doesnt work
 

Guys,
I've got a 1992 Panasonic 20" TV (model: CTN-2056S Chassis: AEDP213)
- the convergence at the bottom of the screen is off. Does this unit
have a "serviceman mode" like the newer panasonics? I've tried the
normal "cable, timer=30, volume=0" but this tv wont even go to channel
124 (max is channel 99).

How can I get into the menu and/or adjust the convergence?

Probably total registration will be by way of the convergence magnetic rings
around the neck of the CRT. Rarely there may be "spot" magnets to enhance
specific areas but rare on 20 " sets.

Hmmm - interesting. It seems like it is only the red convergence that
is off in the bottom 1/4 of the screen. I'm used to stig/flare rings
on crt projector tubes, but not on TV tubes - Which set of rings should
be adjusted to try and compensate?

If this is the standard 20 inch set that I think it is, there are no
convergence controls in the service setup for your set. The bottom, top, and
sides are done with adhesive slip magnets that are mounted on to the CRT
bell, and extend down in to below the yoke windings. You may need additional
magnets from the ones that are already installed.

The ring magnets on the back of the CRT neck only do the main centre
convergence and purity. I strongly suggest to not mess with these ring
magnets, unless you have a lot of experience, and the grating test
generator, to do the proper setup with this.

Most of these sets will have a convergence error of about 1 mm to 2 mm at
the extreme sides, and top and bottom of the screen. The centre area
convergence should be about 1 mm or less error.

Ahh - I thought there might be some slip magnets in their somewhere.
Well, I'm not exactly an expert, but I felt qualified enough to adjust
the ring magnets. Everything was pretty close, but I did manage to
make it noticeably better. I also noticed someone has been 'in it'
besides panasonic - the rings must have been re-adjusted before I got
the unit, becuase the factory marks were off (and re-hotglued). Its
not perfect, but for a 13 year old set it doesnt look to bad.

Also, one of the rubber wedges mounted between the CRT and the yoke may have
fallen out (probably lying on the circuit board); this will allow the yoke to
flop down or sideways about 1/4 to 1/2 in, screwing the edge convergence. If
this is your problem, just shove the rubber wedge back in and glue it to the
CRT with some silicone RTV.
