Default LCD inverter repair

I have several LCD inverter for IBM Thinkpad 600 series laptop that bit
the dust. Symptoms: the screen would light up for a few seconds after
power up and then it goes dark. Sometimes I can hear a faint chirp from
the inverter as it starts up, but then all goes quiet. I have repaired
my laptop a few times using parts from eBay. The question is, what is
typically gone wrong in these small boards? Is it a cap going bad or
the small transformer that generates the voltage to light up the back
light? This item are going for about 10-20 bucks on ebay (pulled part).
I would like to repair these cards myself if possible (have done work
on flat packs in the past, in my younger days.. hehehe ).
