Default Sony Trinitron - Nice Pic, No Sound

I bought a Sony KV-27TSsomething from a local Value Village store that I
thought was working. I tested it by inserting a thin wire at the cable jack
and I could see snowy picture of a local channel and hear the usual static
laden humming sound. I guessed that maybe if I will plug it home to my cable
system, it will work.

When I got home and plugged my regular cable to its jack, picture is perfect
but no sound at all, not even static or humming sound. The remote control of
my old Sony works and I can see that the set is not in MUTE mode. I tried to
give the chassis some mild taps or nudge but still no sound, zero.

Is it worth fixing?

Scope trace the audio path on the main board. If stereo, Probably goes
through 2 TDA7052 amps (r/l channel) to the stereo decoder IC.

The first thing to do is get into the menus and make sure the speakers are
turned "on". This is different than mute, mute simply shuts off all sound, but
is reset when the set is turned off. The speaker on/off will not reset itself.
You need the right Sony remote to set the speakers to on or off. If the
speakers are on and still no sound the audio output IC is probably bad or the
SBX1637 sound board. The set is worth fixing.

The first thing to check is, make sure that the audio is not in the SAP
mode.

Thanks to all those who responded. I borrowed my son's Wega controller and
true enough, the speakers were turned to "off".

Another problem cropped up though. When the audio is set to "SAP" an
annoying high pitch sound could be heard.

SBX1637 audio mts decoder module is bad, very common problem in that
vintage Sony set. While the tv is being repaired, the IF module and
tuner should be checked for failing solder connections, as well as the
line of voltage regulators on the main board.

It would really help to have the suffix of your Model # because with
different KV-27TS** models there are different causes but here are some we
have seen that cause no sound: KV27TS31 - MPX MODULE SKUP9102, KV27TS35 -
SBX1637-11 MODULE ON A BOARD, KV27TS2 - TURN ON SPEAKERS IN ON SCREEN
MENU, KV27TS29 - Q2203 NOISE MUTE TRANSISTOR LEAKY. Hope one of these
helps you out. -Mike

Default Sony Trinitron - Nice Pic, No Sound

Thanks Ron, speakers were "off." Not sure how kids managed to do that.
