Strange monitor fault... "power saving" relay sticks
 

Hello people

I have a strange problem with my PC monitor (VITECH VISION DX-1564 Monitor):

When the monitor enters standby ("Power Saving"), it clicks a relay which
seems to shutdown some parts of the monitor. When I wake up the monitor by
clicking on the mouse / pressing keys, the image returns, but the relay don't
return to the normal position.

This causes a strange effect, the image gets big in the sides and the image is
moving ("drifting" would be a better term) to the left. This makes text mode
stuff (DOS windows) look very odd. Also happens on boot-up.

Q: Is this just the relay used for power saving, that is getting bad?

There are most likely some defective parts in the power supply, or the horiz
scan circuits. If the monitor is not properly serviced soon, it will have a
greater failure. This is usually from many of the capacitors in these areas
starting to fail from age and use. If you are not trained and equipped for
doing monitor service, you should take it for an estimate at a place that
services computer monitors. However, it may be more feasible to replace the
monitor.

I have some knowledge on how to work on monitors. I am aware of the dangers of
high voltage. I would like to repair this monitor, since it is going to my
test machine. Will check this soon

Hi!

If you believe the relay is sticking, you could try prodding it with a well
insulated stick to see if it will release and let the monitor work normally.

Relays do fail...common faults include burned or dirty contacts or actual
problems with the coil inside that does the switching. Even if you should
happen to restore normal operation and the relay seems "fixed" it would be
wise to replace it.

This (the Relay) seems to be the problem.
Finding a compatible relay may be a problem. Hmmm. maybe not.

And I don't like to turn the monitor ON when it is open. :/
