Default Sony TC-FX220 Cassette Deck - Flutter

Hi.

I have a Sony TC-FX220 stereo cassette deck that has a problem with
distortion of the higher frequencies, "flutter". Has anyone dealt with this
problem on this machine? Would it be something mechanical?

Thanks.

Default Sony TC-FX220 Cassette Deck - Flutter

Thanks for the reply.

The machine was purchased in 1985. It hasn't had a lot of use in the last 5
years or so. It is not in storage, it just hasn't been used much recently.
It works ok, except for the warbling that can be heard when a steady, high
frequency note is being played.

If you have unsteady or warbling /quavering effects (especially
notable on piano /violin music - use a tape of this to test) try the
following:

-capstan drive belt needs replacing
-capstan shaft bearing needs lubricating
-take up spool torque too high
-need new pinch roller

How old is the deck? has it just come out of storage or been sitting
around?

vy Hi, (jumping in on the thread-)
vy I have the same machine, same problem. So I bought a drive belt, now
vy the question is how do you get the darn belt on the easiest way? Do you
vy have to unscrew the transport mechanism from the chassis? Without
vy undoing something, it's a closed system and you can't get the belt
vy around the flywheel.

Veet, on some decks the flywheel mount must be unscrewed to let the
belt through. It is easy to smear the drive belt with oil or grease so
it must be cleaned before use.

.... If all else fails, hurl it across the room a few times!
