Default Problem with Aiwa CD-Player... lack of "oomph!"?

Hello people.

I have here an Aiwa NSX-V700 CD Player/Stereo - it was bought in 1997 or so. No
repair has ever been done (just a bit of lens cleaning).

Today started a problem:

- Sometimes I can't play CD's. The CD tries to spin but it spins a little
(making "click, click" sound) then stops. Looks like something that does not
have enough "oomph!" to go - sometimes it manages to read the directory. If I
turn off the unit then turn it on again, the CD will play.

I am new to repair of CD Player.

What can be the cause of this problem?
I suspect a motor, but I have not open the unit yet.

My parents have an Aiwa CD/AM/FM/Shortwave/Cassette mini system. The CD
player exhibited the same symptoms that you're describing. When I
couldn't easily troubleshoot the problem from the topside, I
disassembled the unit's case to get to the bottom of the CD drive. What
I found was tiny wisps of smoke emanating from the units AC power supply
transformer whenever the CD transport was engaged!

I disconnected the power to the CD drive mechanism. After ensuring that
the transformer no longer produced smoke while using the tuner or
cassette decks, I reassembled the case and considered the CD drive a
loss. That was five years ago and the rest of the system is doing fine
(although it's use has been significantly reduced due to the purchase of
a Bose Wave Radio/CD to replace the lost CD in the Aiwa).

I'm not saying that you have a similar problem. I'm just relating a
problem that I had with our Aiwa unit.

But this is something... but since the CD works at random, I am clueless. Looks
like some controller that is confused.

PS: I forgot one thing, this started to happen after a power surge.

Hi!

It could be a motor problem with a partially shorted or dirty spindle motor,
or maybe even sticking/dry gears on the sled assembly.

However, from what you describe (the "clicking") it sounds like the unit is
trying to focus on the disc and failing to do so. After a while it will give
up thinking that there is no disc present.

One of the first things to do would be to make sure the lens is clean and
not scratched or anything. The next thing to try is to find a camera that
will show IR light on a TV screen and use that to examine the laser to see
if it is doing anything.

This could be caused by a weak laser, dirty lens, pickup failure, failure of
other parts, or adjustments that have somehow drifted or have been played
around with. The FAQ for this group has lots of information that could help
you fix the problem. Be sure before you ever touch any adjustment that
everything is working to the best of your knowledge. Make careful notes if
you do change things, and good luck!

If you've been cleaning the lens, I would say the pickup has deteriorated to
this point. Very common problem, the cleaning just put off the inevitable.
These Aiwa 3-bangers are dust magnets. Eventually enough finer particles
settle in under the lens, into the turning mirror, to cause this problem.

I can try this - I will download the FAQ.

Thanks

How was the lens cleaning performed?

Common problem with Aiwa three-disc CD players on shelf systems.

Possibilities:

1. Dust accumulation on the objective lens and possibly inside the pickup on
the tangent mirror, diffraction grating, prism, photosensor array, and/or laser
diode array.

2. Severed conductors on transmission ribbbon.

3. Marginal laser optical pickup.

4. Thermal sensitive laser optical pickup. - Reinhart

I don't remember - this was a long time ago.

Maybe...

2. Severed conductors on transmission ribbbon.

I've read about this.

Thanks for the info. I will check it soon.

If it was a long time ago it may get by with just another cleaning. 6 months
or more is easily enough time to make for marginal playing on one of these,
the way they suck dust in there.

Mark Z.

What i have tried on basket case units is a two pronged attack.
I remove the cover around the lens. Then i squirt canned air around the
laser lens to try to blow out dust under the lens. Then i squirt in some
fast evaporating optical head cleaner in the same place. I make sure the
unit is on its side so the reside can drain out quickly. I have revived
a few this way. Its a last ditch repair before parts replacement.
