Even while right beside the base intermittendly handset
reads "out of range". Any suggestions anyone?

Do you have a wireless internet connection (2.4 gig) right next to the
phone?

I tried to fix one of the 900/2.4 GHz models that acted same way. The
2.4 GHz PA chip (M/A-COM) was defective, shorted out and overheating the
chip and it's associated pass regulator. Never could obtain a
replacement part.
