I am working on a Sony CD Compact Player D-131. Upon starting, the laser
head moves away from the motor drive a couple of times, returning, and then
stops. The disc motor does not turn. I checked the motor by unplugging it
from the circuit board and putting 1.5 volts on the connection and it turns
OK. The readout starts out reading 00, then no disc. Starting the disc
turning should be one of the first items on the CD player agenda. What
could be the cause of its not turning?

Do you know this for a fact? Many CD players won't spin the disc until
focus is established. For portables it is often the case that the disc
spins at the same time but not always.

It's probably trying to detect a disc by focussing the beam and it fails so
it shuts off, generally the cause of this is a bad pickup.

It won't spin up unless the laser beam can focus. It may be the laser lens
is dirty, or bad.

I haven't run much more than a couple dozen disks through it before it
stopped working. Eliminating a dirty lens, is there an adjustment for the
focus, and how could it get out of focus, it slides on a track.
