Arcing Flyback Transformer - HELP
 

Hi,

I have a 1994 Atari Primal Rage Cabinet. The flyback is arcing in all directions
- mostly across a 3cm gap to
the earched chassis but is also arcing to a nearby component on the pcb.

I presume I need a new flyback? Any other components likely to be damaged?

Model of flyback is 2027017-001

Any advice appreciated (guess I may need to buy the new part and then hire
in a professional to do the
soldering etc?)

I can send a 65k .jpg picture of the arcing to anyone interested!

Sounds like you may have an excessive high voltage problem as well.
a 3 cm arc is roughly 30 kV.

Arcing Flyback Transformer - HELP
 

I've run into that problem with the some series of video game
monitors. What I do is chop away at the offending metal frame so that
it is at least 2 inches away from the burn-though spot on the flyback.

If the burn-through is near the Focus/Screen pots on the flyback then
you can use epoxy to fill the hole, after scraping it carefully to
remove any burnt material (conductive!).

Doesn't always work, but I have saved a couple of monitors this way.

Why not just replace the flyback? Seems like the "offending" component is
not the metal frame, which may be providing some shielding or a safer place
to ground any of those "offensive" arcs.

Actually we used to do just that, and the flyback would AGAIN burn
through. Turns out the design of the flyback was poor - the insulation
too thin and the metal that it would arc over to had a nice sharp edge
close to the weak spot.

Since we now cut away the metal we have had no further flyback
failures.

When I run into something like that I usually put a blob of clear silicone
caulk over the offending metal and the burn spot on the flyback as well if
it's still salvageable, so far so good.

that is a wells gardiner part and they are common to see arcing.iirc it is
replaced by hr7717.
