I've had a Nikon 400 laser rangefinder for a number of years now, probably 10 to 12, something like that. We use it infrequently for measuring distance - how far did that Frisbee throw or golf shot go, how far away is that building, etc. It's very useful for sports, none of us hunt any more.

Originally a battery lasted at least couple of years. CR2s are about $10 each, so that wasn't bad.

Now it's a couple of weeks. They seem to discharge when not being used. Is that characteristic of an older electronic device, that it may develop some small leakage current over time. I can leave the battery out until I need it, but I'm curious.

I have a digital caliper that uses an MS76 cell. Seems to have the same
problem, battery used to last well over a year, now it lasts a few weeks,
maybe. I just take it out when not in use.

It's certainly characteristic of batteries bought off Ebay or other
dubious sources. Could that be your problem?

There are LR44 alkaline batteries,and silver batteries in the same size
designated SR44. And there's a dozen or so pseudonyms for each of the
types. MS76 is not in the short list he

Most inexpensive calipers (mine, at least) that use these cells, are not
ever truly turned OFF. Pulling the battery out during idle time is a good
plan (until you damage the battery door).

To make matters worse, battery prices range from $5 to $0.05, and might not
be indicative of quality.
