Mitsubishi Projection TV Won't Power Up

Greetings Gadget Gurus...

I've searched the archives but found nothing on the
subject...

I have a 1989 Mitsu projection tv model VS-5002R (51")
that won't come on. It makes a clicking sound like it's
trying, and will flash lines of color after several
attempts, but something won't quite catch. The problem
was intermittent but it now seems thoroughly cooked.

A friend thought it may be magnet related but that's as
much as anyone's been able to offer so far.

Any clues/hints/thoughts/speculations/conjectures are
appreciated.

N.

PS: please reply here - thanks!

Get your ESR meter out and start checking all the electrolytic caps in the
set. Check out the vertical deflection and power supply circuits.

This model suffers from vertical failure associated with a defective cap in
the power supply.
A known failure mode and a kit is available from Mits to overcome this
problem.
There is also another problem associated with the horizontal driver
transformer.
You would be best advised to unplug the set and have it serviced before the
CRT's are ruined from repeated attempts to turn it on.
There will also be quite a number of leaky caps in different areas of the
circuits that will need replacing to circumvent future failures.

Good Luck,
Bill Jr
