Magnavox TV- horz line only

Magnavox RK5541-CH05 27" TV circa 1991
Early Symptoms:
For 3-4 weeks upon daily initial turn-on, top of picture has "fold-over", as
in the top 3 inches are blank and the next 3 inches have a double scan
image. This goes away in 5-10 minutes.

Final symptom:
Single (or compressed group) of horizontal line across center of screen.
Sound present.

Competent electronic tech (who rarely opens a tv, mostly microwave and sat
communications equipment) wishes advice on where to look for trouble and
keep wife happy.

Also.... Sams only lists RK5541-CH01 (no CH05 model) Any idea on how similar
they are?

TIA,
Tom

The failure that went away in the first five minutes is now a more expensive
problem.
If it had been repaired right away, probably just a couple of electrolytic
capacitors in the vertical circuit. Now the vertical output is shorted,
plus the capacitors and likely a burnt b+ resistor to the vertical circuit.
Any competant technician with minimal tv knowledge should have no problems
with the vertical output circuit on a tv set as those are the most basic
type of failures in a tv set. Just follow the vertical yoke wires back to
find the vertical output ic and look up a datasheet for it to get an idea
what components go where.
