The print head assy and roller assy may require changing. It may be worn
or defective. If the printer is out of warranty, it will not pay to
service it, unless it is a very high end model. In any case, Epson will
not sell the parts or service information, you will have to bring them
the printer.

I have three Epson 1200 Photos and one of them had similar problem.
With me, it was special bit of teflon that was inserted in plastic head
holder and was meant to slide over metal and give the head more or les
constant height over the paper.

That bit has fallen off its place, so whole holder was kinda hanging and
head assembly was dangerously low. Every now and then head has collided
with something else during printing and that caused effect that you
mention. Take a peek at the point where head holder slides over the metal
area...

I would snap a photo or two, but right now I'm in a middle of conversion
from Win2k to Gentoo Linux and I am lacking the tools at the moment....

Regards,

Branko
