Another Sony CCD-F recap question (seems easy)
 
Hi there,

I have currently two problems with my CCD-F355E camcorder
with the famous VA-46 board and it's leaky caps. It is,
surprisingly, in quite good condition though the boards
have never seen a rework (yet :)), recording is suberb,
has only minor playback problems:

1. distorted audio from RCA-jack, though audio from headphones-jack
is crystal-clear with absolutely no distortions (?!?):

I suspect C209 (47u, 6v) which is soldered right in front
of the audio RCA-output, there can't be much between the
good audio-signal of the headphones and the bad from
the RCA (if I only had a schematic of the VA-46), can there ?

2. intermittent color in playback only, direct picture from
camera-head is free from color-flickering, several
sources say C311 (1u, 50V)

tried to track bad caps with freeze spray already, no luck :(

any hints ?

an ESR meter will reveal the faulty electrolytics quickly and easily......
otherwise, substitution and replacement are your only viable troubleshooting
method.

Precisely. Bad caps in camcorders is bad news, and replacing only the
defective ones is a pointless exercise. The covers will be off more than
they're on as more caps fail on a weekly basis.

Most LCR meters require capacitor removal (or at least lifting one leg)
from
the circuitry to make accurate measurements... at that point you might
as
well replace it with a new component. Many meters that measure the
capacity
value do NOT measure ESR. The capacity value can read exactly what it
should and the electrolytic can still have high ESR and not work in a
circuit. If you do not have an ESR meter, the only effective
troubleshooting method is substitution and replacement of the suspected
capacitor.
Generally speaking, if you have done all the work to get access to the
board in this cam-corder, why not do a complete re-cap job??

I understand, I have heard so much about ESR-meters, but at the moment
there are a bit too expensive for me. I'm not a pro but I'm successfully
fixing my stuff on my own (thanks to sci.electronics.repair, the repairfaq
and many tech-websites). I know, I should recap the whole board, but
you know these SONY camcorders have around 80 caps inside which
is really time-consuming and I'm not quite a friend of SMD-soldering
thus I want to spot the bad caps only and have a good friend
who is expirienced in SMD do the job. But I'm gonna ask him,
he might have an ESR-meter :)

Hi Dave,


If it's your personal camera, why not replace them with standard miniature
electrolytics? The purists might have a go at me but I find they last
longer and are a lot easier to install with standard tools.



It's my personal camera, but I'm a purist and soldering standard
caps onto the board would be horror for *g*

in a ccd-f the only good cap is one that was replaced.even in units that
work they all check bad esr.

I could borrow an LCR-meter which measures the capacity,
do you think it measures the caps' capacity correctly without having
to remove them from the board ?
