Nakamichi DVD-15
Having some playback quality issues with this 5 disc changer. I use it
almost exclusively for music CDs but rent an occasional DVD also. I would like to clean the laser lens but don't want to screw anything up trying to get at it. Is this something that is normally detailed in a service manual? If so, where to find manual? If not, any words of advice on accessing the lens? TIA, Smitty |

You used to be able to buy a CD with a brush on it (really!) that would wipe
dust off the lens. It could not, of course, remove impacted schmutz. Unless you smoke, or the player is in a dirty environment, it's not likely the lens will /ever/ need cleaning. I've owned many optical-disk players, and have never had to clean one. If you choose to clean the lens, put a small amount of lens-cleaning fluid on the end of Q-Tip or (preferably) a foam swab, and "gently, gently" roll it over the lens. |

These "cleaning" discs never did work worth a crap. They were simply a ploy to get people's money. Mark Z. |

If not, any words of advice on accessing the lens? TIA, Smitty I had to clean the lens in my car CD player. The lens is mounted in a tiny coil assembly that is in turn suspended by very thin spring wires. So be very gentle and careful when cleaning. I used cleaning solution made for camera lenses. There was a lot of dirt on the Q tip cotton swabs I used to clean the lens. I suspect this was because I drive on dirt roads a lot. Eric |

TIA, Smitty It seems my original post is a bit unclear, so let me clarify: I have the tools and the skill to clean the lens, I just don't have any experience dismantling the player to access it. That's the guidance I'm seeking. Thanks. |
