Police have charged two Marines with beating up a gay man in downtown
Savannah, according to the Savannah Morning News.

The incident happened about 3:45 a.m. Saturday near Johnson Square.

Keil Joseph Cronauer, 22, and Christopher Charles Stanzel, 23, who are
stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C., are charged
with misdemeanor battery in the assault on Kieran Daly, 26, the
newspaper reported.

The Marines told police they were being harassed by a gay man and wanted
to get away from him, but witnesses contradicted that in the police
report, according to the article.

Police say one of the Marines hit Daly in the back of the head with his
fist, knocking him unconscious, the newspaper reported.

"The guy thought I was winking at him," Daly told the newspaper from his
hospital bed. "I told him, €˜I was squinting, man. ... I'm tired.'"

Daly said he had two seizures after the assault and will have to stay in
the hospital for several days, the newspaper said.

Cronauer and Stanzel have been released to military police, and a Metro
police spokeswoman told the newspaper the incident is being monitored by
the department's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender liaison.
