Default SMD pin numbering?

For 3,4,5 or 6 pin SMD packages, too small to have a dot identifier, what
designates pin 1 ? Printing orientation ?

eg top code marked reading, say
ABCD
with pins coming off over and under along the long sides.
then pin 1 at corner nearest the base of the "A" towards D, round as in
standard DIL packages , to above "A"

what about marking
AB
CD
where long dimension is vertical and pinning off to the sides? pin 1 nearest
"A" still, then towards C ?
