Sony Plasma circuit boards: In the old days, people used to repaircomponents?
 

I have a Sony PFM500A3WU which is giving error codes 12 and 22. It
seems to mean that the low voltage rail is gone (in some way) and the
replacement cost for the board is about eight hundred bucks, which
seems to me to mean that Sony doesn't want it replaced.

The unit seems to defy googling in any meaningful manner and all which
is revealed is a whole bunch of people all around the country at the
end of last year saying they get this exact error code. Is there a
recall out on this or does it just mean that that after a certain
amount of use, this board is designed to go? (one description of
Plasma displays suggests that they only have a certain pretty fixed
expected life) Is this an ancient almost pre-internet unit which is
why no one has reviewed it or is it reasonably current (http://

Sorry if my question is a bit 'fin-de siecle' but has anyone scrapped
this unit with a cracked screen where parts may be salvageable or is
there anywhere in New York City I can go where anyone might be able to
identify the component which has gone and replace it?

The relevant board appears to be the APS-136M.

Error code 12 - Warning of decrease of panel high voltage (Vs)
POWER SUPPLY PDP VS

Error code 22 - Warning of decrease of panel middle voltage (Va)
POWER SUPPLY PDP VA

I'd start by checking connector CN5 for voltages going to, and
returning from, the Plasma Display Panel (PDP).

We closed our shops in Brooklyn and Staten Island when profits went down
below zero. I do know someone in northern NJ who does excellent
component-level repairs on Plasma TVs. If anything other than the PDP is
bad and he can get the part he can repair the TV. Please keep us up to date
on this through the newsgroup.
