Default RF modulator needs video to work?

I read in comments about one RF-converter that it only converts audio
if there is video present.

Is this true of all RF-converters?

I guess I need to buy an RF modulator to take the audio and video from
my soon-to-be-bought DVD recorder and send it to the only input on my
TV, a coax connector.

But I would also like to use the modulator to take output from my
AM-FM audio receiver (and its CD and cassett inputs) and convert that
to RF, so I could send it though the co-ax in my house and listen on
TVs in other rooms. Fidelity is not a concern.

All you have to do is connect a video source -- such as the video output of
a VCR's tuner -- to the converter.

William: He doesn't want to feed his VCR into other rooms, he want to
feed audio from his audio sources to other rooms.

mm: In your first sentence in your original post, did you mean to say
that it converts only audio if there is NO video present? Please
clarify that for us.

Secondly, you can experiement by connecting VCR audio only to the
modulator, then checking the results on its host TV. If audio-only
works there, then it can be piped to TVs elsewhere.

Duh... Yes. Feeding a video signal into the converter resolves the issue of
whether a video signal is needed to transmit audio.

Thanks for replying.

No, what you said would be just what I want. What the comment from
someone who had bought it was that it only converted the audio if
there were video present.

That model sounds like it is using the video signal to control switch
the inputs. That is, even though that model has 4 possible inputs, it
uses the presence of video to decide whether to switch away from
passing-through the antenna signal to the tv. VERSUS using one of the
other three inputs, the one that the selector switch is set to.
Because the selector switch might be set on DVD player1, but it might
not be turned on, and the user wants to watch off the antenna**.

I was hoping some other RF modulator did it differently, like maybe
used the audio for this purpose, not the video.

**If there is NO video present, it doesnt' convert anything, and I
guess that means it just passes-hrough the RF-In signal. (Swithing
from RF-pass-through to DVD-player-input/RF-modulation seems to be
automatic on all these things if a signal (a video signal maybe) is
detected at the red-white-yellow RCA input jacks.

Secondly, you can experiement by connecting VCR audio only to the

That would only work after I buy the thing. I was hoping to buy one
that would do audio even without video.

I was hoping the screen would be black when I was only listening to
sound. Of course I could turn the brightness down. But then I'd have
to turn it back up again later.

I'd also have to turn off the video when I was done too, not to waste
electricity, and becaues I'm going to want to go back to the antenna
signal.

I'm hoping to make this all work as smoothly and conveniently as
possible.

Hmm. What would be convenient is if I could just split the R and L
audio into R and L1 and L2, and run L2 into the video input. Do you
think the RF-modulator can tell video input from any other input
signal? The tv screen would stay black, I'm sure.
