I'm having another problem with my 27" Zenith Sentry 2. The picture
tube only shows a narrow slit of light across the middle of the tube.
This is evidently part of thr picture it should be showing.
Occasionally the whole picture will flash on for a few seconds, bright
as ever. This started quite sudenly last week. Could someone tell me
what the problem is and is it worth having fixed? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

fixed?

The problem is likely to be bad solder, especially if the picture appears
correctly for even a short period of time. Does slapping or jarring the set
cause the picture to change in any detectable way?

If you stop using the set and take it to a competent repair shop that you
reasonably believe to be trustworthy, the set can be repaired. If it was
working well prior to this failure, a repair will be worthwhile. Continuing
to use the set may result in more costly damage or damage to the picture
tube. Note that some Zenith sets from the 90s had bad picture tubes.

Televisions contain high voltage and power line connected parts. You should
not take one apart unless you know what you are up to.

Cracked solder joint in the vertical output section, it's an easy fix if you
quit using it now before it burns the phosphors in the tube.

But a bad picture tube would not produce a narrow line across the screen.

True, *but* if the set is one of the ones with the failure prone tubes, it
does come into consideration when deciding how much money to sink into a
repair effort.

Please turn your brightness down immediately (before you carry on trying to
diagnose/repair),
you do not want it running without vertical deflection, as very soon that
line will burn into the screen.
