Default Sears Branded VCR Stuck in "Stop"

My 10 year old [rarely used] LXI Model No 850 began to hang on ejecting
cassettes. [Has auto-load detect mechanism.] I replaced the old, cracked
drive belt. Loads fine now, tape wraps around head for a few seconds, and
then cassette goes through ejection sequence. TV display show "Stop" only,
no picture even when tape fully engaged.
I know this is a very cheap model but I'd rather fix as its used 6 X a year.
Does any one have a suggestion as to why this is stuck in "stop"?
Thank you.

Answer found in Goldwasser's Repair FAQs:
I was testing with the lid off and needed to block the stray light.
