Trouble with FM reception, Sony STR-D857 AV receiver

Greetings. I bought this unit refurbished and have had great luck with
TV, CD and DVD sound but cannot get the FM to work no matter what I
use for an antenna. It just scrolls around and around without finding
a station. Does anyone know any possible answers (short of the FM
being broken) that I can look into? A switch or setting perhaps?

Thanks

Have you tried setting the FM receiver to "manual" rather than "auto", then
putting in the frequency of a known strong local station ? With the tuner
set to manual, with most models the squelch is permanently lifted, allowing
you to hear if there is something there but very weak, something there but
very distorted, or nothing there but noise.

Well, the temptation is to say "It is brokend", but...

Check the antenna connector (coax, right?) and make sure it is not
damaged. Some connectors when used with RG-6 tend to get the center
contact spread apart a bit more, then when you switch back to RG-59
(which may have a smaller diameter) the center contact doesn't make a
connection anymore.

I've seen this several times.
