Hi,

I know this isn't really a repair related question however, I am hoping that someone can help?

I am trying to work out the best way of connecting the line-output connection on a mixer to an XLR input on a professional Sony camcorder?

Can this be done without a transformer? If so, will the quality be affected?

Normal way is screen pins 1&3. Pin 2 remains 'hot'.

If there's phantom power on the input switch it off. Be careful with
levels and do some checks. Don't assume that because it's switched to line
it can handle a 'full on' line signal. Same with it switched to mic. Most
semi pro camcorders have pretty dreadful sound electronics. DigiBeta are
usually ok.

A decent transformer, of course, is the best solution.

Hi...

Would be nice if the Sony had a line input, but if not...

You might like to try building an L pad into your "new"
xlr connector. Put a 200 ohm resistor across the line out and
ground, and 12k or so in series with the line out and one of the
mic inputs.

This will be quite sensitive to noise, so the cable should be
quite short - or you'll have to use a transformer, or at least
an H pad...

It 'can' be done without a transformer, but a decent transformer
isolated Direct Injection (DI) box is the proper way to do it....

The conenction diagram for an un-balanced RCA-XLR lead on the Van Den Hul website recommends connecting Pin 2 from the XLR to the signal pin on the RCA and Pin 3 to ground on the RCA:

The shield is only connected on the input (XLR) side.

They recommend that you only connect the shield (Pin 1 on the XLR) to the RCA ground if there are hum problems?

Update:

I made up a two leads; one that had the shield conencted to pin 3 at the RCA end and another without the shield connected at the RCA.

On two separate occasions, the lead that did not have the shield conencted at the RCA end caused hum & interference on the camera audio.

I wonder why the Van Den Hul website recommends that it is better to leave the shield unconnected?
