The RCA sound issue.

Which units can you unplug the Gemstar module, & have the T.V's work
without it? The units with one, or two ribbons? RCA isn't likely to
have a fix for it anytime soon. Look at this link from 2001.

We have units come in, & work fine. Can you "tweak" the EEPROM?
Remember the old MTC
MTV-2047RF I think T.V.'s, you had to glue a bit of copper, or metal
over the micro, & put grounds on it! Worked great. Has the capacitor
mod worked for anyone? Place a 1uf 50V
capacitor to ground on U13101(15). This swamps the closed caption data
to the micro and stops the reception of the defective data packet.

The units I get, work fine after being unplugged, & brought to the
shop.

Yes there are two types of CTC203 chassis, one is one ribbon with
smart chassis (has micro onboard), and other one that uses two ribbons
with dumb chassis (no micro on the chassis, the micro is built right
into gemstar).

The one ribbon you can unplug ribbon cable and remove gemstar module
entirely. The two ribbon type, you have only two options, manual
reset with remote or unplug and wait for half a hour.

Remember to ask customer first before doing the cap modification
because some use CC.

Cheers, Wizard

What's the gemstar module do?

What are you asking?
What the consumer function of the gemstar module is and why it is in
the tv set?
What does it do that is the cause of the malfunction?
Or something else?

What are you asking? What is the Gemstar function suppose to be? Why is it
in the tv sets? Or what does it do when it malfunctions to lose the audio
in an RCA?

The first, I've heard of Gemstar but I don't know what the purpose of it
in the set is, sorry I should have been more clear.

Gemstar is the brand name for the extended data service hardware format
that sends out the tv show information and tv guide information on
specific tv channels during the blanking interval.

Television sets that include Tv Guide plus have all the Gemstar
features installed. Tv sets with the XDS only have the extended data
feature enabled that gives the show title, run time, and maybe some
other minimal information.

The Gemstar circuit can be implemented in a separate module, within the
system controller ic, or on a separate data controller ic near the
system control ic.

The problem is the Gemstar implementation has some software bugs that
are expensive to fix and each new implementation seems to have a new
software bug. Add the fact that the tv stations sometimes send out
incorrect data on line 21, or it gets distorted on the signal, and
there is a large chance for error.
