Odd DVD Problem, RCA TV/VCR/DVD 27F500TDV

Hi,

I have an RCA TV/VCR/DVD combo, model 27F500TDV (mfg Nov 2003) in my
shop. When you try to play a DVD, a message, "Incorrect Disk" occurs. I
also tried a home made DVD which has home videos recorded on the disk (same
message). Note: I tried 3 other DVDs (same message). However, audio CDs will
play just fine. Note: I cleaned the lens, which already looked very clean.
Inside, everything is very clean.

If I replaced the DVD player assembly, will this fix the problem?

Thanks in advance, Brad

Before you type your password, credit card number, etc.,
be sure there is no active key logger (spyware) in your PC.

Maybe it means incorrect region? That wouldn't explain the problem with
home-burned discs though...
I'd start with a good cleaning. I doubt the DVD assy. would be
available, but it might need a new laser - expensive..

Most likely if the laser will read cd's it's fine.
Like he said it could be a matter of region or it might be a bad or
corrupted bios.
Might try RCA(Thomson??) and see if you can get a copy of the bios to
reflash it with.(usually gone by putting it on a cd, then loading it
in the player and rebooting the unit.
Alot of the time manufacturers use an actual dvdrom drive in their
players. Check and see if the drive tray is a modular unit, if so look
on it top to bottom and see if you can find a manufacturer's label
with mod# and bios version.

On the contrary, I see many different players across my bench, and failure
to play DVDs, whilst correctly playing CDs, is almost invariably due to a
faulty optical block.

I disagree. Many DVD players now use a dual laser- infrared for CDs and
visible red for DVDs. It is very possible the DVD laser is failing and the
CD laser is good. Especially given that the DVD laser is far more likely to
have a lot of hours behind it and the CD laser will in many cases be
virtually unused on a DVD player.

Even on a single laser DVD player it may be possible that a bad laser
/optical block might cause a DVD disc to not play when a CD works fine as
the two formats place different demands on the optical block.
