Is there a newsgroup like this one that is dedicated to troubleshooting PCs?
I've had a problem one and would like to get some help/advice from other opinions. Thanks. |

![]() One day Michele Smith got dressed and committed to text Is there a newsgroup like this one that is dedicated to troubleshooting PCs? I've had a problem one and would like to get some help/advice from other opinions. Thanks. Why not have a look through your News Groups with a search for 'computer' ?? That should show up quite a few including a few specialised ones. -- Regards ..... Rheilly Phoull |

I normally search google groups for the answer. If I don't find what I need, I post to the group that shows up the most with topics similar to mine. There are many groups for different types of hardware and software. Even this group gets quite a few PC related posts which are usually answered. I may, a big may, have finally figured it out part of it. What I have been
experiencing particularily with the internet connection using a high speed modem is constant problems connecting, and when on, freeze ups. I've moved the modem further away, and so far so good. However would the modem cause the system to freeze up? Also, when shutting down I don't get the proper shut down screen, just a blinking cursor, after which will invoke a scan disk at start up. Furthermore, I find at times the system is slow. It all seems random. Sometimes it's great, more than half the time it's a pain!!! "NSM" wrote in message news:TxLxe.75543$wr.39146@clgrps12... Your description sounds like a classic case of spyware (and all the other 'dirty' stuff that goes with it) If I'm wrong I apologize, otherwise I'd strongly urge you to get a copy of Ad-aware (free for personal use), Spybot (free) to detect, remove, and take care of spyware. Also, a copy of f-prot (the dos based version is free) to take care of virus'es) Finally, a firewall - though unless you're prepared to pay for one then someone else will have to suggest which if any may be available without charge. Hope this helps; if you want more let us know. Take care. Ken |

Perhaps the modem doesn't like your monitor also, or try a new cable. N |

Perhaps the modem doesn't like your monitor also, or try a new cable. N That's along the lines I was thinking for the modem issue. A bad cable may have been jiggled back into working. Depending on the Windows (I am assuming also) version, there could be something on the MS knowledgebase about not completely shutting down. The resulting hard boot causes the scandisk. The slowness could be resources going low, a problem with at least some versions of Windows. The best thing right now probably is...what operating system, what microprocessor, how much RAM and hard drive space free, how is the swapfile set up? Tom |

put finger to keyboard and composed: What I have been experiencing particularily with the internet connection using a high speed modem is constant problems connecting, and when on, freeze ups. comp.dcom.modems has several modem experts. I've moved the modem further away, and so far so good. However would the modem cause the system to freeze up? Possibly, if it is a softmodem, a controllerless modem, or a USB modem. I doubt that a serial modem could cause this kind of problem. Also, when shutting down I don't get the proper shut down screen, just a blinking cursor, after which will invoke a scan disk at start up. Furthermore, I find at times the system is slow. It all seems random. Sometimes it's great, more than half the time it's a pain!!! As suggested elsewhere, scan for viruses and spyware. AVG from Grisoft is a free Windows based virus scanner, and ZoneAlarm from Zone Labs is a free personal firewall. Consider using non-MS products for your Internet access. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 's' from my address when replying by email. |

The group alt.certification.a-plus is primarily for people testing for that certification, but if you post there with OT (off-topic) at the start of the message you may get some help. I haven't been there for awhile, but 24hoursupport.helpdesk used to have some sharp PC people, if you can handle the salty language, the squabbles, and manage to keep it on-topic. :-) Also, some people here can probably help, as has been mentioned.
