Repair needed on obsolete cassette player

Hi, I have an Aiwa handheld cassette player that I would like to have
repaired. Aiwa won't repair it (too old), and I can't find a place that
will do it. It was purchased in 1988, and I really like it because of
the equalizer feature and the all-metal compact design.

It emits a shrill noise when I try and play a tape, that's all I know
about the problem. If you can recommend a repair person or place, I
would really appreciate it.

Regards,

Brad

Take it to a local service center that does many of these types of
units. Their techs will have a lot of experience, and they may have
compatible spare parts if required. This may cost a number of dollars,
but you will have a better chance of having it fixed, than doing it
yourself.

is this noise from the speaker or the mech? does the unit have
recording capability?

given the age of the unit, you'll almost certainly need to change all
the rubber parts, which may not be available.

that's the problem-- I can't find a place that will look into it.

does the noise change when you move the volumne control?

does it work in record?

are the batteries good?

There is a record / play mode switch that needs to be cleaned. In the
meantime, put a blank cassette in there and put it into record mode, then
stop it, then record again, etc. Do this several times. It should work OK
for a while.
