TORO leafblower repair?
 

Bought at a garage sale a TORO Rake and Vac model 51549 leaf blower.
Worked twice then quit for good. Opened it up. The motor and switch
are good. Between the switch "live" wire (+) and the motor is a
black block of plastic with the live wire going in and a blue wire
exiting to continue to to motor brush terminal. This part is open.

What is the function of this part and can I get a replacement,
preferably generic from an electronics store? If not is there any
downside to my just bypassing this part and connect the switch
directly to the motor?

I'm not sure from your description but I have one of these (found mine
in the alley) i think mine is model #51567 but a little hard to read.
Mine wouldn't run until I realised that it had an interlock device that
wouldn't allow it to run unless the vac tube was locked into the
bayonet mount at the impeller input or (and I'm missing this part ) a
protective screen that locks into the same place when it's used as a
blower.

Is the motor universal wound or permanent magnet? If it's the latter, that
block is probably a diode.

Its a universal wound. There isn't any interlock on any of the
mountings. My guess is its some kind of thermal protection for
overloads. Perhaps one way round is to replace it with a fuseholder
and put in 3 amp fuse.

If it is a diode, then make sure you tested it in both directions!

As Richard said, that is the safty interlock. Unless the inlet cover is
installed the blower will not run.

Made a final check. It is an impeller cover interlock switch. The
sponge packing around it was hardened and hid the switch mechanism
from my sight. Thanks.
