I don't know what the metal is, it looks as though it was cast and
the inside may have a plating on it.
Yes, the capacitors are soldered to the box. You can see this best on
the first and last capacitor. All the other caps have little posts that
go though the two holes in each wall and are bent over then soldered on
the other side. Only one of these solder blobs is visible in the lower
right hand compartment near where the second coil exits to the third
compartment.
