Another Windows Annoyance
 
I've been paring out unneeded Windows Services... practically HALVED
my memory usage on boot-up :-)

Now I've got something popping up a DOS window during boot-up.

It pops up and goes away so fast I can't manage to snag it with
"Pause" to see what it is.

Is there a way to boot-up that steps thru the boot-up, loading one
item at a time?

Boot up in Safe Mode and see what's loading.

run msconfig and shut off junk startup services.

it will warn you after you boot that you made changes, tell it you don't
care and it stops nagging you.

You can load step by step too. Look at the options.

I've used MSConfig since 95 was introduced. He wants to know WHAT is
loading.

There's a small old program called "hijack this" that tells you what
processes are running and will allow you to permanently delete them
(which is dangerous) but it does tell you a lot about your system,
like what is running and how it started and/or what program it is
associated with.

There are other programs that stop running programs or processes but
doesn't delete them just makes them go away for the current session;
which is a lot safer.

I did the boot log thing. Apparently my "service" killing already got
the culprit. This trip no DOS-window pop-up.
