Too bad nobody has a corresponding high capacity D-cell (ie:
capacity would be about 4 times).
Seems all of the "best" D-cells have the same capacity as the AA and
the weight is about the same.

I was wrong.
Maha indeed has high capacity D-cells; in fact two types:
Their Powerex 11,000 (high capacity):

And their low self discharge Imedion 9,500:

Even their low self discharge is impressive in capacity; exceeds
anything else i have ever seen; the Energizer (which is supposed to be
hot sh*t) D cell is 2500mAh, essentially *identical* to AA cells.
