I have an old Polarad Spectrum Analyzer with a BWO. You can feel the field several inches outside of the cabinet. |

They don't "smudge" the screen - they cause a great spread of purity errors which result in a very pretty rainbow display. |

Dan, U.S. Air Force, retired They are (well were, the invar masks are only used on real CRTs and with the Trintitron slotted mask {which i never did like} the effects were not as big), as a kid i actually did the magnetron magnet to the screen of a color TV back in the 1960s. Dad wasn't even that mad, he had demonstrated playing with them on BW tv previously. Not much later power on degauss went a long ways towards eliminating the problem. |

Dad wasn't even that mad, he had demonstrated playing with them on BW tv previously. Not much later power on degauss went a long ways towards eliminating the problem. I was joking about the "so I have heard." I once took a big, powerful magnet to a black and white screen when I was in high school. It was fun to do, but gave me the idea of using a klystron magnet on a Quasar colour television in the 1980s. It left some nice smudges which I ignored until a friend brought a degaussing coil over. As an aside I find it interesting that radar screens have (had?) a tendency to develop a crater on the inside at the point where the sweep rotated. Dan, U.S. Air Force, retired |
