Windows links provided, most packages available for Mac also.

Try Picasa. Free, produces html slideshows, image conversions, resizing
and re-touching. Supports GPS geotagging and other features useful for
other google products.
http://picasa.google.com/
Get the free download (link at upper right hand of page)
Do Not get the google pack. (adware garbage included you don't want)

If you're familiar with the technical details of image resizing try
Imagemagick. High quality conversions, free, open source, but command-
line only. Used on the server-side of many websites. Supports 16bit
graphics and other high-end features. Handles extremely large
directories. I processed over 10,000 pics taken on vacation in one short
command-line.

Download links for windows at bottom of page.

If you want a painting package, try gimp. Free, opensource, can use free
and commercial photoshop plugins, many scripts available (like actions or
droplets in Photoshop)

Shortcut to download link - http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

If you need RAW image support from digital SLR camera one of the best
I've found is bibble. Conversion only, not a paint program. Has a free
30day trial. Excellent quality in one button auto-correction. Photoshop
corrections don't come close to this. Usually for print work, most people
don't "need" this level of quality, especially for web use.

A high quality windows paint and conversion commercial program is paint
shop pro. Supports RAW, HDR from standard bracketed images, watermarks,
uses photoshop plugins. Under $100.

This one is free and works similar to the Power tools one, available as a
right click on the file.

Use "Paint" ... the version that ships with Vista will resize images, it's
free and you already own it.

Open the image, select Edit|Resize/Skew.

Windows Explorer will do it. You have to right click on the image name.
There's an option there to resize pictures.. at least there is with XP Pro.

Personally, I don't resize pictures unless they're really huge...

With most programs like photoshop and irfanview, you can keep the original size
and save them as web pictures, which make very small file sizes.. YMWV

Amazing!!!! Probably a few thousand other things about Vista that I
don't know. But that is how you learn. Ask and usually someone will
have the answer.

Thanks, George

Irfanview will also easily do batch resizing.......saves the tedium of one
by one. You can also change the physical size and the compression level to
adjust the quality up or down to fit the situation or picture subject. Rod
