Hi

We have open fireplaces, non-lined. I'm sticking plasterboard into the
recesses either side of the fire with gripfill (to preserve maximum
space in the room) and want to clad both sides and the front of the
chimney breast using baord and gripfill also.

As it is a working fire do I have to get the fire check style
plasterboard and will gripfill be fine on the chimney breast?

I cant really dot n dab as I have hole-in-the-wall style fires with a
sqaure marble surround that projects about 15mm so 9.5mm boards and
gripfill should just allow some of the surround to stand proud which is
what I want.

Preserving maximum space would be done by plastering it properly,
not using plasterboard.

Again, sounds like a much better result by plastering it.

If you are talking about a gas fire, which type?

In general don't use plasterboard because it is made with paper.. to quote from the Corgi Manual Gas Fires and Space Heaters Page 18 "Note:Plasterboard is also an unsuitable material for use in the area of the fireplace opening, as temperatures in excess of 49 degrees C, can cause crystallisation and breakdown of the board.

If you are talking solid fuel, surely things are even worse.
