I've got a few used Brita water filters, thinking they might be
useful for something. They were time-expired, so I wouldn't use
them for anything potable, but they were still softening the
water when swapped out, although I presume I could recharge
the ion exchange part in them them by washing through with Brine?
So, has anyone come up with some use for these? Seems a shame to
chuck them out.

Nope, they use a hydrogen/calcium exchange rather than a
sodium/calcium exchange. I believe you would need to use
Hydrochloric Acid to regenerate them. If they swapped sodium for
calcium they wouldn't be terribly good for potable water.

Do you have a lot of ironing to do ?

Really - do those resins really time expire, as long as they are kept
dry ?
