Default Wash Basin Pedestal Query

I wanted to ask about the pedestal that sits under washhand basins .

Should this be able to be removed without completely removing the basin .It's a
bit of a pain to do any connections etc behind the pedestal but removing it
means there is no support for the basin so how do you guys do it .?

Ours slides out by easing the basin up a little, but connections can be
got at with it in place.

Normally the pedestal takes the weight of the basin. So if you can
support it another way (straps etc) and lift it over the lip. Also
pedstals are normally screwed down and sometimes glued to the basin.

It maybe just as quick to remove the basin.
