Default fitting cistern to pan

The seal that connects the cistern to the pan is a spongey rubber ring, do I
just tighten the wing nuts to seal it with the pressure or do you get some
kind of sealent to put on to help the seal be more secure.

or do you get some
kind of sealent to put on to help the seal be more secure.

NO! If you do the person who next has to take it apart will curse you.
