You get YOUR senators, you get YOUR congresscritters.
Presidents are OURS though, the only "national" branch
of govt - all the states, all the people, all the time. This
requires a special voting system to keep everybody, and
everyplace, happy (well, as happy as they can get). The
EC is one such approach, it "spreads the power" (almost
sounds like a leftist invention eh ?) so every state gets
represented whether it's super-populated or not.

It means there can be a President elected who doesn't represent the people.

Presidents, if you look at it, are supposed to
represent all the STATES first and foremost,
the people within them run a close second.

As I said, it's the only "national" branch of govt.
That makes it special, especially in a "United
STATES". The Founders understood this.

Power-by-population is achieved in the CONGRESS
instead ... a body that can, if determined, muster even
more authority than that of the president.

The Representatives in the House of Representatives are elected
to represent the people. Senators are elected to represent their
states. Together, they make the laws.
The President isn't a "representative", the presidency isn't
a representative office at al. He's an executive. His job
isn't to represent the people, it's to see that the laws are
faithfully executed.

The president represents all of us -- to the world, and domestically, in the execution of laws.

He works for us and represents us. We don't work for him. As an executive, he serves only if we elected him to represent us.
