Hummm? Dolt.

Im in the process of getting (6) chainsaws running. So far 2 are
purring like..well..chainsaws...I should have the 3rd up in the
morning and there will be 2 more to go. Ever see a Mac 310 with a 12"
bar? WTF??? Big enough saw to run a 24-36" blade....wierd...
They are part of that batch of stuff I inherited from the guy who
flaked out and started to walk away from a FULL 10x25" storage suite.

Got my 6 1/2hp Craftsman fired up last week, along with a weed eater
and a 4000 watt Onan genset. The Ranger 9 welder/genset is on the
list as well.

Sometime this week, I have to trim my palm tree at the 40' level, trim
back the skunkwood tree overhanging the cargo container, chip it up
and then spread it in the cactus gardens. Had a real cloud burst
Tuesday night..and found one of my 8' storage cabinets awash. In my
den. So I need to go up and tarp the roof. I knew it was getting
bad..but didnt know it was THAT bad. Anybody have pocket change to
put on a new 1/2 roof? Sigh.

Oh..I cleaned up my machine shop, machined a couple 416 SS parts for
one of my sailboats and am getting ready to go get my 1989 Aquarius
23. I was going to do it Friday..but they were going out of town for
the holidays and will be back on the 27th.

So Dolt..what have YOU been doing? Hummmm?

Oh...I forgot to mention, last week and this...in addition to the
daylight stuff, in the evenings...I cast and then loaded 400 41 Magnum
rounds, 100 45-70 300 gr JHPs, 150 405 cast gaschecked rounds in the
same caliber..and 60 of my 500gr hard cast sharp pointed spitzers for
ground squirrel shooting. Along with 400 rds of 158gr SWCs in 357
Mag and 40 rds of 158gr soft point flat nose rounds in 357 Maximun for
the Savage over and under. Ive got 6.5 Swedes in the tumbers as I type
this and will be loading several hundred rounds for each of my
Swedes..each with its own recipe. After that, comes 400 44 Mag cast
loads and a hundred or so JHPs. Then a few thousand .45 ACPs...got
the lead ingotized and now that the weather is cooling off..I can have
a big casting session and run a few hundred pounds of wheelweights
through the molds.

A trade I did over a year ago, finally born fruit, and Im taking
delivery of my AR in 6.5 Grendel this coming weekend ..so have been
prepping 7.62x39 brass into fireform shape. Not sure what Im going to
fireform them with..its a gas piston rifle..cast bullets would be the
thing to use...but cleaning the piston system out....brrrrrr...

Then I need to decide if Im actually going to register the lil
critter..California laws have come un****ed..or wait till the last
minute and see if the Donald and the heavily pro 2nd Amendment new
SCOTUS rules most of California laws unConstitutional. Thats what I
think Ill do.. Afterall..this is not going to be a toting rifle..but a
ballot box/jurybox/cartridge box arm.

Is this good metalworking laddy boyo? Sorry boyo...Ive not done much
machining lately..nor much welding. Oh..I did weld up a base for my
Emglo 3hp gasoline driven air compressor early last week. It will be
mounted in my old service body trailer which I retrieved Sunday. I
still have to go get the old Hobi 16 sailboat thats sitting out there,
but the sale of my friends ranch has run into a snag..so I have a
month or so before I need to drag it home to the High Desert Boat
Werx storage compound...IE..my side yard. That will be #7.
Want to buy a Venture 24? Needs a bit of cleaning and some TLC, but
is in decent shape with at least 5 sails and a MARVELOUS trailer.
$1000, no outboard. The 9.9 Johnson Sailmaster will be going on the
new to me Aquarius 23 when it gets home to her new owner...me.

So mate..what have you been doing eh? Other than way too many pints
from those pesky metal cans....

Oh..Ive been told Im under consideration for a job with a firm that
specializes in CNC metal forming tools, benders, mills, lathes, CNC
punches and so forth. Similar name to the new President. However..it
will be Traveling Service Tech...60 hrs a week+ and flying all across
the US and Canada and Mexico. At my age..Im not terribly sure its
something I really want to do. Road warrior at my age...will be a gut
buster..Ive done it for 30 yrs ...and just when I thought Id found
something local..this turns up. Gotta ponder a lot on this ya know.
Im not going to hang up my rolling tool box for another 7 or so years,
when I turn 70...but damnit...Id love to be able to get in the car,
drive no more than 30 minutes and be at work. This Bakersfield to
Pittsburg crap...gotta ponder on it a lot...big time.

So mate..whacha been doing visa vis metalworking lately?

Hummmm?

Default Not much on metalworking here anymore...

I recently bought this chuck, a product of Inner Mongolia,
http://littlemachineshop.com/product...ProductID=2276

and the snug-fitting 5C mount LMS doesn't list as a backplate for it.
http://littlemachineshop.com/product...ProductID=5479

5C isn't just convenient, it allows the chuck and work to move between
the lathe and an indexing fixture on the mill. There's another
tool-grinding version of the chuck, lacking the outer steps, that some
people report receiving instead.

I now understand the advice that 6-jaws aren't the best
general-purpose chucks and am glad I didn't spend several times more
for the larger choices. It does grip difficult parts like hex bolt
heads and tubing better than a 3-jaw but it isn't a good substitute
for collets for accurate work. The internal gripping range is 0.2" to
about 1.6". The external range is about 1.3" to 3.9" on the steps, 5"
on the unground jaw ends if you don't need the steps to square up the
work.

It won't be my choice for heavy cuts, especially with the jaws opened
wide and little scroll engagement.

What's the quality like? LMS seems hit or miss, but they always make it
right in the end, so they're good to deal with.

LMS is a good source for stuff you just can't find elsewhere for small
machines. Like an offset parting tool holder so you can get it down low
enough to use on a mini lathe. Anybody with a real lathe would never even
think of such a thing.

The fit and finish are good, about the same as my Bison chucks. I
don't have anything better to compare it to. They claim 0.003" runout
and that's what I measured. I probably won't use it long or hard
enough to see wear.

I bought it after salvaging a thin-walled sleeve on my truck that was
part of an assembly which would cost over $300 to replace. The lathe
setup was very wonky without a 6-jaw and I was lucky to have some
tapered scrap that jammed in and supported the tailstock end well
enough for very light cuts.

Oh Gee, hauling another 30 year old piece of aquatic scrap back to the
resident junk yard is "metal working"? Well, I suppose it is.... after
all the truck is made of metal.

And what was it you mentioned about the guy that abandoned a "FULL
10x25" storage suite" thus giving you the opportunity of stealing
everything in it?

Yup. A metal workers metalworker. NOT!

The term I think you are searching for is "Scrap Yard Worker".

A nice combination. I've got a relatively larger (6") 6-jaw
with adjust-tru style mounting, but this would be nice for lots of
things.

Agreed.

Enjoy,

I drooled over a larger adjustable 6-jaw for years but never could
justify the expense since a step collet or custom mandrel holds thin
tubes even better when the job is worth the effort. I already have a
5" 3-jaw Set-Tru and a 6" 4-jaw. The carriage can pass under the 5"
chuck to work on the back side.

I see this one as holding fragile stock like a finned model engine
cylinder while I rough it nearly to shape. Once it's no longer subject
to heat expansion I could make the custom finishing fixture with a
very narrow gripping range.

Funniest element is that he has the time to phony-brag about how busy
he is with all his adventures... while mentioning that one of them is
tarping his roof instead of making what are obviously long-overdue
repairs. He could reshingle the whole trailer for under a grand, which
is 4 months of his cell phone bill to hear him tell it. Or he could
have given up tobacco and soda a few months back and used that money
for roofing. Oh well - interior water park: just another perk of being
a moron who's allergic to employment.

Way back when.... people that didn't work were viewed, with
considerable disdain, as "bums". Today, at least in California, it
appears to be something to brag about.
