Default Trying to make use of a 50 ton bottle jack...

What I really need is a 30, or preferably a 50 ton press. I broke the
last 30 ton unit I borrowed so I presume 50 ton or more is needed for
my process.

....I have a 50 ton bottle jack, but can't imagine anything I can wedge
it and my parts between to actually use it as a press and I don't want
to go out and buy lots of steel to make a press.

I figured maybe between two large oak trees cut to have "flats" in
them to accept the set-up.

My whole set-up is around 30-35" long...

Railroad tracks will move. Large vehicles will be lifted as would the
average bridge - plus I don't want to be seen as a roadway terrorist.

Thoughts, ideas, etc?

Get the steel. A lot better than carving up two oak trees. Lots of H
press designs around. It's going to be hefty to use that jack.

Oaks aren't all that immobile under a few thousand pounds of force,
and they have a nasty tendency to drop widowmakers if something
straining them fails and lets them whip.

500 Lbs applied 50 feet up with a cable bends them considerably. A few
I've done that to have unexpectedly snapped from hidden rot in the
base. One had been leaning over my house. Luckily I was pulling on the
80' tree with a 100' rope.

A few months ago I broke a 3/8" chain when an an ~18" oak trunk I was
pulling down bent over a high spot on the ground and rebounded
sideways.

Not many thing substitute for a press when you need one. Plus a big
press can handle the same jobs as the smaller ones. As a bonus you could
make a brake for it to bend your own brackets and mounts.

Any friends with a log splitter?

Harbor Freight 50 ton Arbor is $799.99 right now:

http://www.harborfreight.com/50-ton-...ess-96188.html

Might be able to use a 20% off coupon on it:

Can I come test it?

Next week, when I pick it up from auction.

I personally want to keep this press, but my lead guy says we do not
need it. So it is subject to withdrawal!

See what dies they have. See what the square inch on the punch or
whatnot. See what the force it takes to punch a hole in a xx inch thick
bar of steel. Book work. Solves the problem.

Pressing on and off axles - press has height and width. Nice.
