I want to build my own space station in Earth's orbit.

What do I need to do?

First, be like all smart people and crap in your pants. I know for a fact
Einstein did that just before he came up with the theory of relativity.
After you've completed that, I'll give you the next step.

Why build your own when you can just steal the existing one?
Henchmen will be involved, of course- I suggest you start right away on
engineering a fast-growing breed of superwarriors, and make sure to
have at least one special agent with a fez, and one of eastern descent.

Hmm, I think the first step is to break into Fort Knox, and carry
off all the gold. This may be enough, but if not, you'll need to
raid a few other countries repositories. After completing this
step, the rest should be relatively easy.

Getting Burt Rutan on your payroll would be a good second step.

Start by building your own vehicle to reach orbit. Using your
existing chassis would save quite a bit of expense as it already
most of the directional and guidance equipment. The only item
missing from the chassis is propellant, but it does have front and
rear vents which would be more than adequate for the necessary
propellant to acheive orbit.

Get yourself a good supply of aluminium foil shielding material to
keep all of the aliens from reading your mind, then remove all
fabri/plastic materials from your vicinity and ensure that your body
is fully shielded with the aforementioned foil. Now you can start to
formulate plans.

Go to russia with $50 for parts and $50 to buy some engineers.

Five easy steps...

Step 1 build orbital vehicle.

Step 2 Build Radio controlled Rubber Alien Puppet

Step 3 Use Step 1 fly up and attach Step 2 to the existing ISS near a
window.

Step 4 operate Step 2 .

Step 5 when the current residents of the ISS leave or die of fright
it's yours...

Step 5a if the current residents counter attack with their own rubber
alien puppet, verify it's really rubber before responding.

Failng to do this step properly could start an interstellar war.

Paul
P.S. I'm still working on step 1.

Can I help?
I have a Chinese lathe and mill and a Machining for Dummies book at my
disposal. I could make the torque thrusters or something for a peanut
butter and jelly samwish.

I think there may be a Gingery book (Dave or Vince?) out on this! :-) But
first you have to build the charcoal foundry, lathe, mill, drill press,
metal shaper, injection molder, and vacuum former!

First get yourself into a geosynchrous orbit above a good building
supply store.
Make sure you have enough rope to reach the ground.
Have a mobile phone and credit card.

As you decide what materials you need , phone the store, place an order
and drop the rope.
Store fills your order and ties the rope to it. You then pull it up.
Start with small orders. As the mass of your station increases you can
get bigger orders.

Make sure to remember to get enough air and water each time. Or scoot
over to MIR and borrow some.

But, the geosynchronus tractor idea is certainly a better way to send

I tried to interest people in a polar geosynchronous orbit awhile ago
without success. It would stay stationary over the north pole :-)

How about building a machine shop in low earth orbit? You could launch
Doug Goncz
up there with his self replicating machining center. Bring the raw
materials in from the moon and use solar power
to smelt the Iron and let the robots take over. Should do away with
cheap Chinese tools within a couple centuries.

That was the "last straw" that put author Dale Brown on my "never
read" list. There is only so much "literary license" will permit.

Start your own little country. Create a space agency and offer a joint
operation with the U.S. The U.S. will then fund and test all the components
for you. Heck they will even test your rockets at Huntsville like they did
for the Russians.
Once it's off the ground default on the program and the U.S. will pick up
the whole tab. It works. Ask Russia.

And a worldwide video hookup so you can threaten heads of state and so

Oh..and good minions. They are very important.

There was a big buzz about 20 years ago for a scheme like that. It used
mass drivers on the moon to get an efficient launch system to bring the
ores to the earth orbit where the solar power station was.

So who has been keeping the ISS supplied for the last couple of years then?
