Default OT- Bill Gates Speech

If you have not seen this item, copy it and tatoo it on the ass of any
teenager you have within reach.. If you have seen it, post it on the
door of any high school in your area (like Martin Luther).

Much truth here.

Bill Gates Speech 2002

Whitney High School CA: The summary is worthwhile reading for anyone.

Love Gates or hate him, he hit the nail on the head with this.
To anyone with kids, here's some advice Bill Gates recently dished out
at a high school speech about 11 things they did not and will not learn
in school.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will
expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You
won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents
had a different word for burger flipping -- they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine
about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are
now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and
listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the
rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try
delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life
has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll
give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't
bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off
and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do
that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have
to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Ah, Marv, that's an urban myth. Gates never wrote it nor spoke it, and most
people who know him and who have commented on it say it doesn't sound
remotely like anything he would say.

Don't feel bad. Several newspapers have repeated it as the words of Gates,
including the Atlanta Constitution. They, too, appear to have forgotten how
to check their facts.

Oh, that's item number 12: Check your facts before repeating what someone
else told you. You'll be surprised at how many homilies and aphorisms turn
out to be unmitigated bull****, usually written by losers who think they
know the secrets to success. g

And besides, *everyone* knows that 90% of the HS kids
already have cell phones.

Well, I got caught on this one! Urban Legend says " This list is the
work of Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why
American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can't Read, Write, Or
Add. (The list has appeared in newspapers, although not necessarily in
this book.) Many versions of this list omit the last three rules: "

Sorry about that.

Jeez, there's no need for an apology. Myths can be fun.

It's also fun to track them down. It tells you something about the process
of myth-making. In the Internet era, the whole process is compressed, but
it's the same ol' myth-making process.

No prob. If you've ever heard Bill Gates give a speech, you would know it
wasn't him. That was what prompted me to head over to Snopes.

long, long time.

Charlie Sykes is among other things (I suppose) an AM radio
personality in Milwaukee.
Also one of my old highschool class mates.

His wife Diane is/was a Wisconsin supreme court justice who
(whom?) President Bush recently chose for the 7th court of
appeals in Chicago.

Bill Gates never gave that speech. The points made and the way in which they

It is highly questionable anyone ever gave this "speech".
