Default ? kenmore washer repair tech advice

i've got a 12yr + kenmore series 60 washer that needs repair. i've
looked at the spec drawings at sears.com and am not sure..... the
thing runs fine, except during spin cycle = the center agitator, while
spinning with the barrel, develops this grinding noise - sounds like
teeth on a gear - and as the barrel picks up speed, the agitator
'grabs' and stops for a moment - with a loud bang!. the whole unit
continues on and spins normally and the 'grind and bang' continue. if
i open the lid during spin and physically grab the agitator and hold
it still during active spin cycle, the unit runs on, finishes spin
cycle and drains. the grinding sound appears to be coming from within
the barrel and not from below. i guess my ? is.... will this be the
brake mechanism? or will it be the clutch mechanism? i dont know
enough about the functin of these systems and am unsure that if i get
it apart i will be able to tell the bad part(s)...also any tricks for
reassembly of unit i should know??? thanks

Hi,

Model#??
http://www.applianceaid.com/model.html
-Some- model# helps.

The agitator should just -go along for the ride- during the spin
mode....possible something inside the agitator is worn/broken or the
noise is from the gearbox. Brake and or clutch should effect the spin
from working normally if they where giving problems. Maybe take the
agitator out and try a spin to see what noises occur or what happens??

the agitator just comes off of a gear that goes down into a stationary
shaft. the noises stay the same. still sounds to me like it comes from
this shaft where the brake and clutch are (according to the diagrams
avail at the sears site). the only part of this cycle that is affected
is 'spin', when the agitator drive shaft grinds and catches. the
faster it spins the more it grinds until it goes BANG and jerks the
agitator to a stop. i thought that it spun free which is why i did
something stupid like grabbing it while spinning. something from the
drum spin mechanism is catching onto the agitator shaft. i dont
suspect the gearbox because it agitates well (cant grab it then!!!)
and diagrams show gearbox below the drum, not in it. any more ideas?
please? the sears site is junk and they dont offer tech, just sell
parts they have no clue about.

Hi,

Kinda -sounds- ( no pun intended ) like the tranny/gearbox is making
those noises if the agitator is still engaged during the spin mode.
Loose/worn basket nut and drive block can make noises but usually
won't effect the agitator.

Some checks for the clutch and such....

thanks jeff
now that you describe it like that, i agree. it seems like the
agitator is sort of engaging during the spin cycle. not good. because
i can grab it and stop the event and i only notice it when spin speed
increases i suspect worn part in agitator linkage. maybe transmission?
anyway. your first link was nice - pics and all. helps a novice like
me keep act together. your second link gave me a script error and
'page not available' screen, and wont back button from there either.
what sucks - and why i delay - is that i worry i'll get the thing
apart and not be able to tell the bad part. probably just a matter of
nerves and guts. gotta go for it and just find out....
