Hello. Here's my problem, I hope someone can help.

I have an older (about 25yrs old I think) Craftsman snowblower. This
is the first winter season that I've used it (I purchased from the
previous owner of my home), but did have it all tunued up and checked
put before using it. Eveything checked out.

I first time I used it, I noticed that when I tried to go through
deeper snow, one half of the auger used to pickup the snow would stop
rotating. The other half would continue to rotate though. The
portion that had stopped was connected via a chain to another smaller
rod with tines (positioned along the top of the front auger cover). I
figured that this side of the auger was just getting jammed up, as
there is not a lot of room between the auger tines and the cover.

Since then I've had some additional problems that I was able to fix
myself (twice the wheel drive stopped working - once due to a slipped
chain and once due to a broken axle shear pin).

I just replaced the axle pin, and the motor and wheel drive both work
great, but now as soon as the augers hit any resistance either one or
both sides of the main auger stop moving completely. When under no
load at all, they spin properly. This didn't start happening
immediately after changing the shear pin (I'd been using it for about
20 minutes), so I think it's likely unrelated to anything I could have
done within the wheel drive assembly compartment, but I might be
wrong.

I'm not sure what the problem might be. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated! Please feel free to 'dumb it up' a tad when
giving your ideas, as it seems I'm just mechanically inclined enough
to get myself into trouble!

It sounds like the augers don't have their shear pins installed on their
axles and are only free-wheeling due to friction. With the machine OFF check
the axles of both augers and you should see where shear pins should be
installed. If you find where they should be and are missing (bolt holes
without bolts) don't install regular bolts but get actual shear pins from
your local hardware store.
