Britain to ban sale of all diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2040

Even with a present rather limited range of (say) 100 to 120 miles, it would be ideal for the sort of mileage my wife and I normally do each week. However, if we all have use all-electric cars for all journeys, surely the obvious problem is getting the 'fuel' into them. With petrol and diesel, it takes typically a couple of minutes to put the fuel in, and maybe five minutes to complete the whole business. Even if filling stations can provide sufficient charging points, how long will it take to fill up a typical vehicle? I guess it's a lot longer than five minutes. Of course, one advantage of electric vehicles is that we can fill them at home. But how many houses can physically provide a charging point? How many have at least a driveway? An awful lot of vehicles are parked on the road - so will a lot on on-street charging points need to be provided (like rows of parking meters)? There's also the problem of supplying sufficient electrical power and getting it to all the charging points. Where does it come from, and how does it get from A to B? It has been suggested that there will be a massive growth of local home generation (wind and solar), and this will minimise the amount of National Grid and local distribution that's required - but again, a lot of homes are not suitable. And the sun doesn't shine when you need the charging the most, when cars are parked for the night. But it also means that most charging can be done when other demand from the grid is lower. It will be interesting to find out how these problems are resolved. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!), I won't be around in 2040 to find out. -- Ian I'll let you know how it works out. |
