Default help on water supply line to toilet

hi, i`m replacing a bathroom toilet, however when i turn the water
supply line valve off its o.k. when i turn the water on the valve leaks
around the stem (slow drips) since i don`t know how to sweat copper does
anyone have any suggestions. thanks, wayne

The packing is bad. Google for valve packing.

If it is the packing thats leaking then you could try tightening the
packing nut at the stem. Tighten up only enough to stop the leak or
you could make the situation worse. As far as sweating copper, is
the valve truly soldered on? A lot of them are put on with
compression fittings. If it is you can remove the valve by unscrewing
the compression nut and then using a compression nut/faucet handle
puller to pull of the old nut and sleeve. A puller costs about $10.00
at Home Depot or Lowes.

This is good advice!

I have also replaced many compression fittings with new ones without pulling
the sleeve and nut.

If you snug it down and it don't leak, it is fixed. Buy the 1/4 turn so you
don't have to do this again next time.

Don't connect the copper to an aluminum toilet or else it will catch
on fire, at least that's what I am told in this newsgroup.
