Default Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers: Review & Recommendations

Hello,

My Sears brand lawn mower doesn't want to start anymore. I used it
only for 4 seasons and have always changed the Oil, Spark Plug,
air-filter, blade, etc. regularly! Instead of spending money to fix
it, I was thinking of buying a Cordless Lawn Mower. Since I have about
5000 Sq. Ft of lawn to mow and I don't usually let it grow too tall, I
think a Cordless Electric Lawn Mower might work for me and I would not
have to do all the maintenance a typical gas mower requires and
wouldn't have to bear all the noise and starting problems. If anybody
has experience with cordless lawn mowers please reply.

I have searched the web and various manufacturer's web sites and I
think the only company who makes such lawn mowers any more is Black &
Decker! And, I have checked a few local stores (like Home Depot,
Menards, Ace Hardware, etc.) and no one seems to carry cordless lawn
mowers!! If possible I want to buy from a local store and not from web
sites like Amazon, etc.

Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks
Gary.

I do not have a cordless but have a Black and Decker Electric for
maintaining about 5000 sq ft of yard. I love it. I have been using
electric for about 7 years and think it is great for small yards. I do
not like breathing unburnt fuel and combustion products.

You have to learn to dance around the cord - minor inconvenience but not
really all that big a deal once you get used to it. It has been able to
handle all normal and abnormal conditions relatively well - for example in
winter I throw down winter rye. If it rains a lot and the grass is too
wet to mow it can grow unbeleivably tall. Combine this with skipping
mowing because this happens a few weekends in a row and I could have grass
almost approaching my knees. Even under these conditions, the mower
performed tolerably (not perfectly - it is a mulching mower and the large
amount of clippings would accumulate and stall the motor. However, if I
cut short patches and did narrow strips so that the I did not generate
enough clippings to choke the motor, it performed fine.) I shared a mower
with a friend for the first five years and bought my own two years back.
The original is still going strong with the friend and so it is obviously
very durable with no maintenance. I am not sure that a cordless would
have the oomph to grow through tall grass patches that I describe above.

Default Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers: Review & Recommendations

I've owned a Black&Decker electric for over 4 years now and have been pretty
happy with it. I like:

light and easy to move
can store upside down if needed (never done this though)
no smell, liquids to deal with
no gas/oil to purchase
no spark plugs
no maintenance so far even though used almost every weekend

Dont like:

having to drag the cord although you get used to it
range limited to length/guage of extension cord
not as powerful as gas powered mower (haven't needed the extra power yet)
being careful not to cut cord with blades (hasn't happened yet)

I've talked with people who owned the cordless mower and they were
dissappointed with the life of the battery.

Good luck.

We have a Robomower (robotic lawnmower). There's no cord and you don't
even have to push it. Have had it one season and no problems. The only
issue is that it is heavy and you're supposed to store it inside and
always plugged in so it can recharge. We have lots of steps so it can
be a pain to have to carry it up from the basement to the lawn. Once
it's up the stairs, you can use the remote to move it into position.

We sit on our deck with our glasses of wine and just watch it go. It's
definetly for lazy people. Oh, and it's really cute. Like a bright
yellow VW bug.

I have a Black & Decker cordless for my small lawn (the entire
property is 5,000 S.F., on which the house and a shed sit). This is, I
believe, the third year we've had it. I love the mower (I do at least
half the mowing around here). I love the fact that I don't have to get
involved with gasoline, that there are no fumes to inhale, and that
it's so much quieter and lighter than the gas mower. On the other
hand, my husband misses the powerful gas mower. If you mow often and
don't do so when the grass is wet, you'll like the mower. It works
well as a mulching mower, but on the rare occasionas that we've used
the bag, we've been disappointed. (My husband used to mow and bag the
leaves in the fall with his gas mower; it saved us a lot of raking.)
Somehow, bagging doesn't seem to work well with this mower; we're not
sure why.
