replaced thermostat - Em/AUX heat always on
Dear Bryant,
I have a Bryant model 517E heeat pump with a 10KW heating unit. I have recently replaced my Bryant BDP CO. P271-457 thermostat with a Honeywell CT3611 Programmable thermostat. I was careful to label the wires using the letters above the screw terminals on the old thermostat. I then matched wires to the terminals on the new thermostat. With the new thermostat I have noticed that the aux/em heat coils are always ON when the thermostat calls for Heat. The outdoor compressor is also on (which I know is normal). No matter what mode the thermostat is in, Heat / Auto, Heat / On or EM HT / On, when the thermostat calls for heat the heating coils are always turned on. I called Honeywell and they asked me to find out what the functions of the- Y, G, R, O, W1, E and C terminals do then I will call them back to make sure it is matched correctly to the new thermostat. Does anybody here know? I also noticed on the low voltage terminal board that both the E and W1 wire go to the same terminal, W1. In looking at the schematic in the installation instructions, this does not appear to be correct. Should it be this way? Thanks! -Giles |

If you find a solution, please let me know. For the moment, I have moved the wire that was on Aux Heat relay (W2) to Em Heat relay (E) so that the resistive elements are off except when I switch to Em Heat. If I figure it out I will switch it back so that it works "properly". There is a note in the Honeywell manual that says that if SmartResponse is not enabled, the Aux Ht will stay on all the time until the heat setpoint is reached. SmartResponse gets set in the customization stage (push up/down/i all at the same time, find feature #13, set it to 0 to enable Smart Recovery - it's in the manual). I have mine set to 0, but it does not seem to make it work the way I expected. I still see the Aux Ht display when the heat goes on. Haven't tried setting it to 1 yet. I wonder if it is documented incorrectly, and "1" means "Enable SmartResponse"? There is another note (and the HVAC company I called) that says that if there is = 3 degree difference between the room temperature and the desired setpoint, the Aux Ht will go on until the setpoint is reached. But I see that even if there is only 1 degree difference, the AuxHt display goes on immmediately. This is confusing. You must make sure you have set up the customization correctly (e.g. feature #5 and #7 set to the correct type of heat - hot water, gas/oil, electric - mine is set to electric (9)). Hope this helps. |
